About the Institute

Octopus Research Institute conducts open, applied and responsible research into artificial intelligence systems and their real-world human impact. We investigate the technical foundations required for accountable, accessible, governable and sovereign AI.

Mission

To investigate, test and advance the technical foundations required for accountable, accessible, governable and sovereign AI — and to report findings honestly, with limitations visible and claims backed by evidence.

Research philosophy

We value evidence before claims, reproducibility where practical, honest limitations, clear provenance, community participation, privacy by default, responsible release, transparent conflicts, human accountability, and correction over concealment.

Research independence

Research findings are not altered to support commercial narratives. Negative results are not hidden. Commercial interests are disclosed. Research limitations remain visible. Research and product claims are kept clearly separate.

Funding transparency

Octopus Research Institute receives infrastructure, engineering support and funding from Octopus Core Pty Ltd. Commercial interests are disclosed on the relevant research, publication and dataset pages. Research findings, including negative results and limitations, are not altered, suppressed or embargoed to support commercial narratives.

Conflict-of-interest principles

Where a programme, publication or dataset touches an area in which Octopus Core has a commercial interest, that interest is disclosed on the relevant page. Disclosure is a requirement, not an option.

Research governance

Statuses, disclosures and limitations are first-class and, in several cases, required by our content model. Corrections and retractions are recorded rather than concealed.

People and governance

We do not list people, titles, boards, fellows or advisory committees unless they are real, verified and configured. Where none are configured, this is stated plainly rather than filled with placeholders.

What we do not claim

We do not claim university status, government accreditation, registered-charity status, ethics-committee or institutional-review-board approval, ISO certification, clinical accreditation, or formal academic affiliation, unless verified documentation exists.
